One of the most interesting crest itineraries of the Monti della Laga , is the one that partially develops on Sentiero Italia . It climbs San Paolo and then it twists and turns through a suggestive ridge towards the remains of Montecalvo fortification which extends over wide ledges. Its building dates back to the years before the year 1000.
In 1200, it was abundantly fortified because of its proximity to the boundaries of Naples kingdom, and it subsequently became a refuge for bandits who left there for their raids.
